Introduction Atmis?

The African Union has a mission in Somalia called the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, and they are now working to wind down their peacekeeping operations there (ATMIS). By the end of 2024, when ATMIS’s job is done, the Somali National Armed Forces will be in charge of all security work in Somalia. As part of the Army Training Mission, troops from the East African countries of Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda are based in Somalia (ATMIS).

The African Union Transition Deployment in Somalia was set up on April 1, 2022, the day after AMISOM’s mission ended on March 31. Since the African Union has left, the Somali government’s goal has changed. Now, they want to put more emphasis on the country’s growing military and institutional independence. According to the Somalia Transition Plan, the mission’s job will end on December 31, 2024. After that, the Somali Security Forces will be in charge of keeping the whole country safe. Beginning in December 2022, the number of people working at the mission will slowly go down.

On April 6, 2022, Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble told the African Union’s Ambassador Francisco Madeira to leave the country for “acting in a way that is not appropriate for his position.” The country gave Madeira 48 hours to leave.
