What is Facebook?
Facebook is considered to be one of the most popular social networking sites found on the internet. Its popularity made online hackers take advantage of any simple bugs, exploits, and user stupidity they could find to spread their website, virus, worm, or trojan. Below are some tips to keep in mind when it comes to creating your first Facebook account. These tips will ensure your account remains safe from spammers and phishers.
1- When creating your Facebook account, make sure you choose a strong password. A strong password contains a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and characters such as $ or #. These types of passwords will make it impossible for any hacker to brute force your account. A brute force attack is an attack where the hacker uses software that verifies passwords found in a text file, on your account, called a dictionary text file. Now the trick is to make sure your Facebook password is totally different from any password you use on any other online accounts such as your email password and website passwords. That way, if your email password gets compromised, your Facebook password will remain unknown.
2- When you log into your Facebook account, make sure you are using the official Facebook website. Always check that the page you are accessing from contains the official Facebook web domain which is http://www.Facebook.com. Phishers usually try to log you in from similar Facebook domains like facelook.com or face1book.com. So always keep an eye out. Also, never try to log in from a page you received from someone, even a friend. I managed to steal about 120 Facebook accounts using phishing alone, so be careful not to fall for this trap.
3- Assign a security question to your account. A security question is the most useful technique that will help you regain access to your Facebook account no matter what. Even if you lose access to your email, you will still have access to your Facebook account if you know the secret question and answer to your Facebook account. You can assign one by going to your Account Settings.
4- Assign your mobile number to your account. If you lose access to your Facebook account, you can enter your phone number so that the Facebook administration can immediately send you a verification code to your mobile phone.
5- Never accept a friend request from someone you don’t know. More experienced hackers are able to hack into a Facebook account they are friends with. So to be safe, only accept friend requests from people you know.
6- Finally, always make sure you have a good antivirus, with the latest virus definition updates. Also, never underestimate having a good anti-spyware program. Run regular scans and change your password from time to time.
Following the above tips will definitely help you keep your Facebook account safe and sound.
