Madurai Kamaraj University is located in Tamil Nadu, India on 750 acres on the Madurai – Theni road, 13 kilometers west of the city. Established in 1966, it is a large institution, with undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees, as well as research and professional education programs for both students and faculty. Scholarships and research grants are available. Students will be awarded a certificate or diploma depending on the chosen curriculum and may pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Research scholars can apply for full-time or part-time positions and can earn a doctoral degree. Madurai Kamaraj University is a statutory university, recognized and funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities. It has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade A. While its guiding philosophy is steeped in the honorable traditions of ancient beliefs, the university embraces modern technology and creates an enabling atmosphere of equal opportunity, encouraging any student to manifest his potential.
The university has 109 affiliated colleges, with study centers in Madurai, Chennai, Trichy, Theni, Ramnad, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil and other states. There are seven night colleges for day work students and distance learning centers in 103 other states and seventeen different countries. On its home campus, Kamaraj University Library is the second largest in Tamil Nadu. There is a computer center and educational media research center for video production which created and aired 3380 educational television programs.
Schools within the college include Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Energy and Environmental Resources, Economics, History, Mathematics, Physics, Philosophy, Tamil, Earth and Atmospheric Studies, Economics, Education, Languages, Information and Communication, performing arts, religions, social sciences sciences and youth welfare. Each school is made up of several departments. For example, the school of biological sciences has departments of biochemistry, plant science, molecular biology, genetics, animal behavior and physiology, microbial technology, immunology, plant morphology, and algology. The School of Religions, Philosophy and Humanist Thought has departments of Islam and Tamil Islamic Studies, Saivasiddhanantha Philosophy, Gandhian Studies and Ramalinga Philosophy, Interfaith Relations, Philosophy, Christian Studies and Guru Nanak Studies. There is also an adult/continuing education department, a voluntary scheme called the National Service Scheme for social services and a matching kidney and bone marrow transplant service facility.
Comprehensive campus facilities cater to the needs of the many residents. 1080 students can be accommodated in university hostels, in five male and three female dormitories. Staff and guests also have their own quarters. There is a 24-hour teaching hospital, canteen, co-op shops, post office and branches of the State Bank of India and MDCC Bank. There is a beautiful indoor sports stadium with wooden floor and 1000 seats. Basketball, badminton, table tennis and volleyball courts are available.
Madurai Kamaraj University is one of the top nine universities in India, having been awarded the “University with Potential for Excellence” honor by the UGC. The motto of the university is “Seeking truth is knowledge”.
