With China becoming the sixth largest economy in 2004 and possibly the fourth largest in 2005, this is likely to fuel further anxieties about the impact of China’s growing economic power on world business leaders. But for business executives and aspiring young entrepreneurs, it has become imperative to understand China so as to explore the growing business opportunities in China.
One of the usual paths for this is to study and build social networks in leading Chinese universities. The latest available data shows that there were approximately 85,000 foreign students studying in China in 2002. Nearly 500 Chinese universities, mainly in Shanghai and Beijing, accept foreign students. The top 5 universities with the highest number of foreign students are Beijing Language and Culture Center, Fudan, Peking, Tsinghua and Shanghai universities.
If you plan to pursue a postgraduate MBA program while working in China, there are many learning organizations to choose from.
The University of Maryland Smith School of Business offers graduate, custom, and certificate programs at learning centers in Beijing and Shanghai. The first class of Smith’s Executive MBA program began in January 2003 and graduated in the spring of 2004.
The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee School of Business Administration recently launched an EMBA program in Beijing in partnership with Motorola for Motorola’s China operations personnel.
Along with the prestigious Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, the University of British Columbia also offers an international MBA in China. In addition to having the same curriculum as its Canadian MBA, University of British Columbia professors teach all courses.
Another EMBA program is the 2-year part-time Cass EMBA off-campus program of City University from Great Britain, which was launched in cooperation with Bank of China and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
The UK’s Nottingham University is the first foreign university to establish a physical campus in Ningbo in September 2004. Nottingham Ningbo’s undergraduate degree is comparable to that of the UK campus with all courses taught in English.
The Chinese government is actively promoting more educational links in China to develop graduates who will be better oriented for the many multinational corporations operating in China and drive economic growth. Currently, there are about 700 such jointly run educational programs in China.
With the many future and current leaders and managers in China enrolling in the many tertiary education and postgraduate MBA programs, it makes sense to undertake these courses and build a social network that will be useful for operating within the Chinese business community for the future.
